Is Windows 11 better than 10? Can I upgrade to Windows 11 for free? Is upgrading to Windows 11 worth it? Can this PC run Windows 11?

Microsoft's Windows 11, launched on October 5, 2021, is the latest major release of their Windows NT operating system. It was made available as a free upgrade to Windows 10 users who meet the new system requirements.

Windows 11 brings significant changes to the Windows shell, taking inspiration from the canceled Windows 10X project. These changes include a redesigned Start menu, the replacement of "live tiles" with a separate "Widgets" panel on the taskbar, the ability to create sets of tiled windows that can be minimized and restored as a group from the taskbar, and new gaming technologies inherited from Xbox Series X and Series S, such as Auto HDR and DirectStorage (on compatible hardware).

In terms of web browsing, Internet Explorer (IE) has been replaced by the Chromium-based Microsoft Edge as the default browser, similar to its predecessor, Windows 10. Additionally, Microsoft Teams is integrated into the Windows shell. Microsoft has also announced plans to increase flexibility in software distribution through the Microsoft Store and to support Android apps on Windows 11, including a partnership with Amazon to enable its app store functionality.

To enhance security, Microsoft raised the system requirements for Windows 11 compared to Windows 10. The official support is limited to devices with an eighth-generation Intel Core CPU or newer (with some exceptions), a second-generation AMD Ryzen CPU or newer, or a Qualcomm Snapdragon 850 ARM system-on-chip or newer. Devices must also have UEFI and Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0 support and enablement (with potential TPM 2.0 exceptions for OEMs). Although the OS can be installed on unsupported processors, Microsoft does not guarantee the availability of updates. Windows 11 no longer supports 32-bit x86 and ARM CPUs or devices that use BIOS firmware.

The reception of Windows 11 at launch was mixed. Pre-release discussions mainly revolved around the stricter hardware requirements and whether they were genuinely aimed at improving security or a strategy to push customers towards newer devices, with concerns raised about the associated e-waste. Upon release, it was praised for its improved visual design, window management, and stronger security focus. However, criticism was directed at certain modifications to the user interface that were considered inferior to its predecessor, and some changes were seen as an attempt to discourage users from switching to competing applications.

As of April 2023, Windows 11 holds a 23% worldwide market share, making it the second most popular Windows version, while its predecessor, Windows 10, maintains a market share 3.1 times larger. Across all platforms, Windows 11 runs on 6.4% of personal computing devices.
